A Local’s Guide to Visiting Skagit County
April is one of our absolute favorite months—not just because it’s Tulip Festival season, but also because it’s Astraea’s birthday month! There’s something so special about celebrating another trip around the sun while the whole town is buzzing with energy. Downtown Mount Vernon comes alive with visitors, stunning window displays, and the excitement of spring in full bloom. The mix of fresh flowers, happy travelers, and vibrant community spirit makes this time of year feel truly magical. We love soaking up the joyful atmosphere, meeting new faces, and sharing our favorite local spots with everyone who comes to experience the beauty of Skagit County.
Things to Do While You’re in Town
While the tulips may be the star of the show, there’s plenty more to explore in the area. One must-visit destination is Downtown Mount Vernon, a charming, walkable district full of local shops, cozy cafés, and delicious restaurants. Our store proudly sits at the corner of 1st and Montgomery, inside a beautifully restored historic building.
Throughout April, downtown businesses will be decorating their windows with spring-themed displays. As you wander through town, be sure to check them out and vote for your favorite using the QR codes posted in each window. It’s a fun way to engage with the community while soaking in the seasonal spirit!
Where to Eat, Drink & Shop in Skagit County
No trip is complete without indulging in the local flavors and shopping for unique finds. Here are some of our favorite spots to grab a bite, sip a drink, and pick up a souvenir while you’re here:
Downtown Mount Vernon
- Skagit Valley Larder – New this year, this wine shop, cut-to-order cheese counter, and café is quickly becoming a local favorite. We had a fondue pot there for Valentine’s Day, and it was absolute melted cheese heaven! Whether you’re a wine enthusiast, a cheese lover, or just looking for a cozy place to unwind, Skagit Valley Larder is a must-visit.
- Ristretto Coffee Lounge & Wine Bar – Located at 416 S. 1st St., right behind the largest mural in Skagit County, this coffee shop is a daily stop for us. The coffee is top-notch (approved by self-proclaimed coffee snobs like us), and the staff is always friendly. If you’re in need of a caffeine boost or a relaxing glass of wine, this is the spot.
- El Sage Designs – This family-owned shop specializes in original screen-printed apparel and carries an incredible selection of indie-made gifts from over 200 makers, authors, and small businesses. Whether you’re looking for a unique souvenir or a thoughtful gift, El Sage is a must-visit
Breweries
Mount Vernon is home to some fantastic breweries, each offering a unique taste of the Pacific Northwest’s craft beer scene. Whether you’re a fan of hoppy IPAs, smooth stouts, or crisp lagers, you’ll find something to love here.
- Farmstrong Brewing, our favorite. Known for it’s relaxed atmosphere, rotating seasonal brews, and spacious beer garden—perfect for unwinding after a day of tulip viewing. Another favorite is
- District Brewing, a local gem with a great selection of house-made beers and delicious pizzas to pair with your pint. Located on the riverwalk downtown. Kids love this spot for the games upstairs.
- Temperate Habits serves up expertly crafted beers in a laid-back setting, right on 1st street. They have a Mac & Cheese grilled cheese that is, top notch.
West Side of Skagit County
- Christianson’s Nursery – One of the most magical spots in all of Skagit County! The grounds are absolutely stunning, and there’s so much to explore. Our favorite areas include the cactus greenhouse (a warm retreat on chilly days), the historic Schoolhouse, and the English Rose Garden. You’ll also find a fantastic selection of indoor and outdoor plants, a charming gift shop, and food trucks on weekends.
- Snow Goose Produce – If you’re looking for an alternate route to avoid downtown traffic, take Fir Island Road to Conway and hop on I-5 at Exit 221. But before you leave, make a mandatory stop at Snow Goose Produce for some of the best ice cream around—a local favorite!
No matter how you choose to spend your time in Skagit County, you’re in for an unforgettable Tulip Festival experience! ✨ Enjoy the blooms, explore the charming small-town vibes, and be sure to check out some of our favorite local spots.
Happy Tulip Season!
